EXODUS CHAPTER 17 - 17:8
EXODUS CHAPTER 14
14:30 - Redemption: ( EXODUS type ) Summary. Exodus is the book of redemption, and teaches:
( 1 ). - redemption is wholly of God (EXODUS 3:7__8; JOHN 3:16 );
( 2 ). - redemption is through a person ( EXODUS 2:2; JOHN 3:16__17 ).
( 3 ). - redemption is by blood ( EXODUS 12:13, 23, 27; 1 PETER 1:18 );
( 4 ). - redemption is by power ( EXODUS 6:6; 13:14; ROMANS 8:2 ).
The blood of Christ redeems the believer from the guilt and penalty of sin ( 1 PETER 1:18 ) as the power of the Spirit delivers from the dominion of sin ( ROMANS 8:2; EPHESIANS 2:2 ).
CHAPTER 15
15:25 - These bitter waters were in the very path of the Lord's leading, and stand for the trials of God's people, which were educatory and not punitive. The "tree" is the cross ( GALATIANS 3:13 ), which became sweet to Christ as the expression of the Father's will ( JOHN 8:11 ). When our Marahs are so taken we cast the "tree" into the waters ( ROMANS 5:3__4 ).
CHAPTER 16
16:35 - Manna, type of Christ as "the bread of life," come down from heaven to die "for the life of the world" ( JOHN 6:35; 48__51 ). A "small" thing ( EXODUS 16:14 ), having but the taste of "fresh oil" ( NUMBER 11:8 ), or "wafers with honey" ( EXODUS 16:31 ), it typifies Christ in humiliation as presented in Matthew, Mark, and Luke; "having no form nor comeliness; . . . no beauty that we should desire him" ( ISAIAH 53:2 ). But as such He must be received by faith if we would be saved ( JOHN 6:53__58 ). To meditate upon Christ as He went about among men, doing not His own will but the will of the Father ( JOHN 638__40 ), is to feed on the manna. This is, of necessity, the spiritual food of young believers, and answers to milk" ( 1 CORINTHIANS 3:1__2 ). But Christ in glory, and the believer's present and eternal association with Him there, answers to "the old corn of the land" ( JOSHUA 5:11 ), the "meat" of Hebrews 5:13__14, or Christ as presented in the Epistles of Paul 2 Corinthians 5:16.
EXODUS CHAPTER 17
17:6 - The rock, type of life through the Spirit b y grace:
( 1 ). - Christ the Rock ( 1 CORINTHIANS 10:4 ).
( 2 ). - The people utterly unworthy ( EXODUS 17:2; EPHESIANS 2:1__6 ).
( 3 ). - Characteristics of life through grace:
( a ). - free ( JOHN :410; ROMANS 6:23; EPHESIANS 2:8 );
( b ). - abundant ( ROMANS 5:20 PSALM 105:41; JOHN 3:16)
( c ). - near ( ROMANS 10:8 );
( d ). - the people had only to take ( ISAIAH 55:1 ) The smitten_rock aspect of the death of Christ looks toward the out-pouring of the Holy Spirit as a result of accomplished redemption, rather than toward our guilt. It is the affirmative side of John 3:16. " Not perish" speaks of atoning blood; "but have" speaks of life bestowed.
17:8 - Amalek, grandson of Esau ( GENESIS 36:12 ), who was "born after the flesh" ( GALATIANS 4:22__29 ) and progenitor of the Amalekites, Israel's persistent enemy, is a type of the flesh in the believer ( GALATIANS 4:29 ). But the conflict with Amalek in chapter 17 sets forth the resources of the man under law, rather than those of the believer under grace. The man under law could fight and pray ( Verses 9__12 ) Under grace the Holy Spirit gains the victory over the flesh in the believer's behalf ( ROMANS 8:2__4; GALATIANS 5:16__17 ); but this victory is only as the believer walks in the Spirit Acting in dependency or disobedience, Amalek gains an easy victory ( NUMBERS 14:42__45 ). Like Saul we are prone to spare the flesh ( 1 SAMUEL 15:8__9 ), forgetting Romans 7:18 "Flesh," John 1:13; Jude 23.
18:19 - Numbers 11:14__17. Jehovah entirely ignored this worldly-wise organization, substituting His own order.
